Vor allem im ersten Kriegswinter waren deutsche Soldaten nur unzureichend mit Winterkleidung ausgestattet. Viele von ihnen erlitten Erfrierungen an Füßen und Händen, aber auch im Gesicht. Die Ausfälle durch Erfrierungen überstiegen teilweise die Kampfverluste.
