Oppression

"Oppression refers to an overt or secret malicious and harmful pattern of subjugation and exploitation of a community or individuals practiced by a regime, which is thus authoritarian or totalitarian but may be autocratic or hegemonic, on one or more levels of social structures such as governments and institutions from international to local. Oppression is practiced by methods such as controlling all or some of its citizens or subjects via state control of politics and law, the monetary system and economy, media and information sources (including propaganda, misinformation, and censorship), and violence including the military; denying people any meaningful human or civil rights; and terrorizing the populace through harsh, unjust punishment, and a hidden network of obsequious informants reporting to a vicious secret police force. Oppression may be distinguished from an individualĀ“s actions which form a part of a system of oppression, or defined as the collective results of institutionsĀ“ and individualsĀ“ actions." - (en.wikipedia.org 11.12.2019)
