Einzelne gesellschaftliche Gruppen nahmen sich schon relativ früh der kritischen Aufarbeitung des Krieges an. 1967 gründete ein Bündnis aus Christen, Kommunisten und jungen Sozialdemokraten in Westfalen den Arbeitskreis »Blumen für Stukenbrock«, um die Erinnerung an das Kriegsgefangenenlager Stalag 326 Senne lebendig zu halten. 15.000 sowjetische Kriegsgefangene waren hier zwischen 1941 und 1945 umgekommen. Bis heute veranstaltet der Arbeitskreis jährlich eine Gedenkveranstaltung in Stukenbrock.
